Heber City + Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce + The Community Alliance for Main street are kicking off their Historic Downtown Mural Initiative with its inaugural mural project.  Heber’s Downtown Mural Initiative will produce 6 to 12 murals over a period of 3 to 5 years.  We believe that art can be transformative and the impact of community mural making has value way beyond the art on the walls. It is a form of expression that gives voice to what is important in our community and will drive economic vitality in our community’s historic downtown area.  Our inaugural mural project will set the standards for future murals.

Open to all artists.  Must be 18 years or older to apply.

April 20, 2020

We are seeking an artist or artist team to create a mural on the north facing wall of the Heber Valley Visitor’s Center located at 475 North Main Street, Heber, Utah, 84032 (see pics of mural site below).  The Chamber building serves as the northern gateway to the city with the building’s northern wall completely visible to the 15,000 cars that drive by the building on a daily basis.  It’s estimated that 30% of the commuters are visitors to the city. The importance of this mural project cannot be under estimated as it will set the tone for those entering the City and for future murals.

The selected artwork should consider the themes of welcoming visitors, outdoor sports destination, local historical or nostalgic images, or variations of these themes.  The artwork should also be of a creative nature to serve as an instagrammable photo-op for visitors.  The mural does not need to express all words of the theme, but can embody any of the above thematic paths.

HV Chamber Building

The surface of the wall is a light-colored stucco, with total wall dimensions, or area for proposed mural, of approximately 321 inches wide by 104 inches high, with the option to utilize the full height of the wall.  The mural does not have to be sized to use the entire wall dimensions.

- April 20, 2020: Applications/submittals due
- April 27 through May 1, 2020: Submittal reviews by committee of downtown stakeholders and artists

-May 4 through 8, 2020: Mural selection
- A finalized sketch of the winning design is due at least two weeks prior to the beginning of painting.  Final sketch will be reviewed by committee to ensure project meets desired outcomes.
-May/June 2020: Painting will take place (exact dates are flexible within this timeframe and will be negotiated with individual artist).

COMPENSATION: You’ll be asked to enter your estimated expenses for the material cost of paint and compensation for the artist(s) time, on the Artist Application form as directed.  The selection committee will consider mural cost as part of the mural selection criteria.  Heber City will manage the preparation of the wall and scaffolding which do not need to be calculated in the artist’s cost estimate. The selected Artist will be required to execute an agreement detailing terms of the Artist engagement.

To apply, please fill out our Mural Artist Application Form online by visiting  Include with Application the following items:

• Application Form

• Portfolio consisting of at least 2 previous work samples—mural work samples preferred—and reference information

•Detailed Sketch and/or colored replica of proposed mural art work

If you have questions about the application, please email or call 435-657-7885.

The Selection Committee will select the winning design based on the following list of criteria:

Artistic quality of submitted designs and past work samples

Appropriateness of artwork in scale and imagery to be visually effective

Relevance to the applicable themes as listed in the project descriptions

Instagrammable opportunities for community engagement

Mural cost, although not a top factor in the selection of the mural, will be considered in the selection process
